There are several good charts available on the web, detailing what is
definitely public domain, may be public domain, definitely under
copyright,
etc. The one I'm currently using is at
<http://www.copyright.cornell.edu/public_domain/>, last updated January
5,
2009. It was compiled by Peter Hirtle, based on similar charts by Laura
Gasaway <http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm>, and others.

I hope this chart helps give you some guidance in the future.
