Hello all at ILL-L,
This message is a coincidence right now with us. In my 7 years at
Harford Community College Library ILL, I have just experienced my first
lost item through USPS and am sending a message to ILL-L in case anyone
comes across it.
On Friday March 13, I received a package from the Interlibrary Loan
Department of Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, OH for a patron of
mine. It was for ILL #51742254 and was supposed to have contained 2
video cassettes - part 1 and part 2 for the title "The Message." But
only part 2 was in the box, and the part 1 video was missing.
Unfortunately when I had received the box, the condition of the box was
that the side flaps had collapsed inside revealing open places and the
tape was not as secure. There was a sticker on the box from the USPS
that they had received it in damaged condition. So, I suspect that the
part 1 video must have fallen out of the box as the box collapsed
somewhere in USPS shipment during its travel along the line between
lending library Shawnee State University (OSS) and our borrowing library
here at Harford Community College Library (HAR).
I have sent a message to HCC campus' Distribution Services, who sort
all mail and deliver it to buildings on our campus, to see if they might
find the stray part 1 video and also to keep an eye out for it in case
is wanders in. As the borrowing library, I have also contacted the
lending library with all this information and asked for a replacement
invoice, per ALA ILL code for borrowing libraries.
So, I am just passing the word out there in ILL-L that if anyone sees
part 1 video for "The Message" (ILL #51742254) from Shawnee State
University (OSS) in Portsmouth, OH and meant for Harford Community
College Library ILL (HAR) in Bel Air, MD, please direct it to me at
Harford Community College Library ILL or back to its original lender at
Shawnee State University ILL.
Thanks so much for your help!

We are currently in the process of paying for 3 separate items that
were lost in the US mail just since the beginning of the year, and we
generally only “lose” 2-3 items per year total. So yes, we’re seeing an
increase in lost items thus far this year.

Subject: [ILL-L] Damaged/Lost Materials in US Mail
Recently it seems we have noticed an increased amount of items sent in
the US mail that are either damaged in shipping or the packages have
been torn open and the material is lost. Have other institutions
noticed an increase regarding this issue? Currently we only insure a
portion of our packages so we are paying for the lost/damaged materials
in accordance with the ALA Interlibrary Loan Code. I am just curious,
are others experiencing this?
