[ILL-L] Late Friday Request

The copyright information is to advise the requestor, among other things,
that "the photocopy or other reproduction is not to be used for any purpose
other than private study, scholarship, or research. If a user makes a
request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in
excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement."
For instance, if our patron requests an article through interlibrary loan,
and then makes 30 copies and hands it out to their class, they've been
warned, and they are the ones responsible for any copyright liability.

I don't have electronic forms for patrons. Wouldn't the copyright boxes be
for the borrowing library rather than the patron?

Before patrons submit their requests on our electronic forms they need to

check the box by the copyright statement acknowledging that they are aware

of copyright restrictions. I was told that the reason we need one form for

each request was because was for the copyright acknowledgement.

Like I said previously, once I run a search & the patron brings it back

with articles circled or starred, I just have them write their name &

contact info on the top sheet. I then take one of my forms & put the

info on it & make copies according to how many requests they have. I

would never ask them to fill out multiple forms when I am here to do the

service.

I'm not sure why, from a patron's point of view, that the patron would

know or need to know about how we need to make separate requests to get

the items from different libraries for them. If, for some reason, your

system is set up in such a way that is impossible for you cancel the

request and make separate ones, then I understand. It also seems

reasonable to send the patron a note asking for separate requests in the

future. However, I don't see an advantage in forcing our patrons do

something that would be a convenience for us but is not a necessity for

them. After all, I'm the one getting paid to help the patron, right (not

the patron getting paid to help me)?

Agreed! When we had paper forms I would flatly refuse to fill them out

for people unless the patron has a physical disability. Much to the

dismay of a small portion of our patrons, laziness did not count.

As far as I am concerned. If they don't have the time to fill out the

form, they don't really want the item.

Well, it saves THEM time. I think I''ve already told the story of the

patron who requested 126 items simultaneously--but only filled out one

form. When I explained we needed one form per request, he told me, "YOU

fill them out." (So I did.)

So here is one for you:

I just got a request from a patron who used one request form for five

different books. They listed all the book titles in the title line of

the form and just separated them using commas. Brilliant!
