[ILL-L] Late Friday Request

If a library doesn't have holdings listed, we just assume it's
electronic and not available. We've done some experiments and they
usually come back deflected. Another option is to post onto the list to
see if anyone can lend it,

I guess I'm just a curmudgeon, but I am the ref/bi/ill/systems librarian
and the assistant to the director, so I don't have a lot of time to fool
around cleaning up after patrons who don't want to do it.

I pretty much agree with Melissa and Susan. If they can't do it, then
they must not want it or need it. 

Back in the days of paper, I felt sorry for them. I told them to fill
out one form with their patron info and attach the list to it. Then I
created a CD patron record and just started searching and creating
records. That doesn't work well now that my CD records are all
delivery-based rather than patron-based.

Also -- today with electronic forms, they only have to fill in the
fields one time and the data pop up like magic in the next request. If I
have to do it, I have to cut and paste each line or type and then scroll
down through the information for 20 patrons looking for the correct
stuff. If I clear the data for one patron, I've cleared the data for
every other web form/application I use.

My biggest frustration is that I feel processing ILLs has taken a huge
step backwards. 

I'm spending all my time these days trying to figure out who has the
print journal rather than the electronic subscription. If I can't find
anyone with the print version, then I have to try to decide who is more
likely to have ILL permission for the electronic form. 

Kudos to WVU Libraries (our main campus and a separate unit) -- they
have everything linked and will tell you if they can fax, mail, or
deliver electronically. 

I spend 10 to 15 minutes per journal request looking at each possible
lender's catalog record. It is so frustrating to have gone from the days
of zipping through with the old telnet client and custom holdings and
union holding records to being bogged down with the web interface. 

Spring Break starts in 40 minutes -- let me out of here!

I'm not sure why, from a patron's point of view, that the patron would
know or need to know about how we need to make separate requests to get
the items from different libraries for them. If, for some reason, your
system is set up in such a way that is impossible for you cancel the
request and make separate ones, then I understand. It also seems
reasonable to send the patron a note asking for separate requests in the
future. However, I don't see an advantage in forcing our patrons do
something that would be a convenience for us but is not a necessity for
them. After all, I'm the one getting paid to help the patron, right (not
the patron getting paid to help me)?

Agreed!  When we had paper forms I would flatly refuse to fill them out
for people unless the patron has a physical disability.  Much to the
dismay of a small portion of our patrons, laziness did not count.

As far as I am concerned.  If they don't have the time to fill out the
form, they don't really want the item.

Well, it saves THEM time.  I think I''ve already told the story of the
patron who requested 126 items simultaneously--but only filled out one
form.  When I explained we needed one form per request, he told me, "YOU
fill them out."  (So I did.)

So here is one for you:

 

I just got a request from a patron who used one request form for five
different books.  They listed all the book titles in the title line of
the form and just separated them using commas.  Brilliant!
