Your patron loses an ILL book and you pay the lending library for it.
A year and a half later, the patron finds and returns the book. The
book is still in useable condition, and according to the lending
library's catalog, they have not replaced the book.:
1. As a Borrower, what do you do?
We would check with the Lender and ask them their preference and if they
would refund our money. But- chances are, we would have billed the
customer for the book. The customer would have to pay for it; the
customer's library card would be invalid until the monies we paid for
the book were reimbursed. But- my staff has found that most of the
libraries we deal with go either way on whether or not they want the
book back, but will not refund monies.
2. As a Lender, what would you prefer that the Borrowing library do?
In our case, due to accounting costs we can't refund price (minus
processing fee) of the book after this much time has passed. A year and
a half falls outside our Circulation Policy parameters (6 months) for
a refund. The record for the book- if it was our only copy- would have
been deleted from our database after a year and a half. In our present
fiscal situation, it probably would not be replaced.
