[ILL-L] Microfilm to PDF w/OCR

Greetings -

I realize this is a bit of an odd question, but since many of us deal
with microfilm I thought I'd give it a whirl on the list. A faculty
member here is interested in having some of his student workers take
several microfilm reels (of a 1930s-era newspaper) and have them
converted to searchable PDFs. Our microfilm machine is not networked, so
our only option right now is to print off individual pages, scan those
on a flatbed scanner, and run them through OCR in Acrobat Professional.
This method seems cumbersome at best, particularly given the potential
quality control issues that may arise. Is anyone aware of a for-fee
service that would digitize a small number of reels (i.e. 2 or 3)? I
doubt that it would be within his price range, but I'm trying to provide
information for the student who is coordinating the project.

Thanks!

K.
