This is not just common wisdom, it's contained in the national ILL code: http://www.ala.org/Template.cfm?Section=InterLibrary_Loan&template=/ContentManagement/ContentDisplay.cfm&ContentID=31579 section 4.9

The borrower is financially responsible for the material if the material is lost in transit.

Subject: [ILL-L] Responsibility for lost in transit items

Collective wisdom needed -
What is the accepted protocol if a book is lost in the mail? In this case the lender sent the item to the borrower and the item never appeared.

Just for the record what would be the protocol if the borrower was sending it back to the lender and the item never appeared.

Please reply off list.

Thank you.
