[ILL-L] Banding Books

After losing too many book bands with a message similar to the one
below, I've started using a different phrase that seems to be more
successful:

PLEASE RETURN BOOK STRAP WITH BOOK

They still remove the strap but stick it inside the book. This younger
generation does not like to be told what it cannot do...

We put bands on all our ILL books, but I try to remember to remove them
from books we've borrowed before I return them to the lending library.

Of course, the bands don't always stay on. As I've vented before, we
put a note on the band saying

Please do not remove band!!!

but not only do many patrons remove band, we once had a student worker
who did.

Yes, we provide a return address label with books we lend, and
appreciate it when libraries that lend to us provide one. (But if they
don't, we're still grateful for the book!)

Greetings from Dallas and Happy Friday!

I have a couple of questions. When you loan a book, how do you mark
that it's yours? We put a band of yellow around our books, with the
ILL information, due date, etc.

If this book was loaned to you, would you put your own band around the
cover of the book? How do you identify this book as a loaned ILL item?

When you loan a book, do you band it? If not, how do you mark it as
belonging to your library? Do you just depend on the loan slip to
provide all the information?

Oh, one more thing. Do you provide a return address label with your
book? I send out return labels, but it seems not many libraries
actually use them.

My supervisor wants to make changes in our identification process, so
your input would be helpful. You can e-mail me off line if you want.

Thanks.

Sally
