[ILL-L] Embargo and fill rates

Instead of requesting blindly, I have taken to using the print records and checking online catalogs when a request is urgent (as most are these days, since we have 150 graduate students in Education taking an "intensive" summer course and seeking articles published in the past year) to determine whether a library has the issue we need in hard copy. This has speeded things up considerably (during the week I was on vacation, someone else requested without checking, and articles took on average nearly three times as long to arriive). But this is time-consuming (sometimes I have to check about 20 catalogs), and I can do it only because I'm at a small college--if I had 200 article requests a day instead of two or three, I couldn't do it.
