[ILL-L] "Not Received" status puzzle

We lent out an item to another library which they never received. The
status of the request is "NOT RECEIVED." However, there is also a
returned date. We searched our shelves and found the item.

Is this what happens when the borrowing library eventually does
receive the item that was previously on "not received" status, then
returns it? I would have thought they would have to first change the
status of the "not received" request to "received" before they system
would let them return an item.

Or, could we have generated a return date by updating the request to
"complete" because it showed up back at our place in the mail? Again,
I would not have thought the system would allow this sequence of steps.

It's not a big deal...we have our item back. But this is the second
time this has happened and we are curious as to how a "not received"
item can have a return date.

Thanks for any inspiration on this!
