[ILL-L] RE: Textbooks and ILL

I talked this over with my Borrowing staff. We print out a slip of paper
(to attach the paperwork that comes with books to) for each item we
process. If we don't have a slip for a book, we know it's because it's
a Direct Request book.  She says she doesn't print out many of these;
she estimates that between 5-7% of our books are Direct Request. I've
noticed that about 5-10 requests a day pop into the Awaiting
Cancellation queue that could have gone through by Direct Request. They
had valid OCLC numbers or ISBNs and had sufficient libraries for custom
holdings.

I'm curious as to how much of this type of request, and those for
popular fiction etc., is related to the increased use of Direct Request
and other forms of patron-initiated/non-library-mediated ILL? Does
anyone have a feel for how many of these requests are placed by ILL
staff for their patrons, and how many are placed directly by the patron?

Subject: [ILL-L] Textbooks and ILL

Hello all,

We are noticing an uptick in the number of ILL requests for textbooks
this semester. We are sympathetic to the economic crunch of the
students, but worry that ILL is not the best solution, and dread the
inevitable due dates of these materials mid-semester. Does anyone have
policies re: ILL of textbooks that they could share? We have long had a
policy of not purchasing classroom textbooks for the library collection,
and are now realizing that we need to extend that policy to Interlibrary
Loan. The primary concern is enforcing this policy, especially given
the broad array of material that shows up on syllabi and reading lists.
Any advice is appreciated.

Many Thanks!
