[ILL-L] Textbooks and ILL

We do not borrow "required" textbooks.
We receive a list of required and recommended textbooks for
classes each semester.
We do request the recommended books.
It was a difficult decision and we had to argue with the reference
staff because they would be the ones to get a lot of complaints, but
it has saved a lot of ill will with other libraries, billings,
processing invoices,
clearing invoice and all around hassles.
We are glad we did it and don't receive as many complaints after two
years of having the policy in place.

Subject: [ILL-L] Textbooks and ILL
Hello all,
We are noticing an uptick in the number of ILL requests for textbooks
this semester. We are sympathetic to the economic crunch of the
students, but worry that ILL is not the best solution, and dread the
inevitable due dates of these materials mid-semester. Does anyone have
policies re: ILL of textbooks that they could share? We have long had a
policy of not purchasing classroom textbooks for the library collection,
and are now realizing that we need to extend that policy to Interlibrary
Loan. The primary concern is enforcing this policy, especially given
the broad array of material that shows up on syllabi and reading lists.
Any advice is appreciated.
Many Thanks!
