[ILL-L] Limit to number of books a student can take out?

We limit in rounds: 10 items (books and/or articles) requested per round. Once the first request comes in, they can submit a new round. Once the first item in the second round comes in, they can submit a third round.
I always warn people borrowing five or more books that they are responsible for using the books in a timely fashion and getting them back on time. We charge for overdue ILLs -- double our normal overdue fees -- so I remind them of that.
Frankly, I haven't come across anyone other than a graduate student and a history professor wanting more than five books on ILL at a time. The graduate student is a dream ILL patron -- everything in on time and renewal requests early if needed. The professor, however, wouldn't return his ILLs on time or respond to renewal reminders and turned into such a PITA that I hope he never requests anything again. Thinking he was just an isolated case, I didn't revise our ILL policy because I didn't want to punish the graduate student, but if it happens again, I will.
15-20 books sounds excessive unless they are graduate students (thesis/dissertation course) or off campus students.
Have you talked to collection development and to the professor to see if there are materials you need to purchase?

We have a class where some students are requesting 15-20 books
interlibrary loan. We have a policy of no more than ten ILL books
charged out to a patron at a time. Do other libraries have similar
policies or thoughts? Thanks,

When their items arrived, we send an email letting them know that it is
here and that we will hold it for 10 days. On the 11th day we send the
item back or recycle the articles. If there are charges from the
lending libraries they are put onto the patrons account. Otherwise we
don't charge.

I'm interested in knowing whether other libraries have a $2 fines for
items not picked up.
We are considering doing this because we have over 30 returnables each
month that never get picked up. We also have just as many or more
electronically delivered articles that the users never read.

Last year we instituted a $2 postage/handling charge for ILL's received
and
a $2 additional fine for items not picked up. It worked
wonders!
