[ILL-L] Max days pending request at single inst?

I was relieved (as I am when others confirm that something that seems odd happens to them too) to read that others have my experience. While I think part of the problem stems from the way the OCLC uber-software manages queues (For example: Library A says no to the request at 10 PM, the request goes to the already closed Library B , the clock's ticking and at midnight the request leaves Day 1 for Library B and enters Day 2 for library B.
So- if Library B has to get the book for the request from a branch on day 2, it may or may not get there in time for them to fill it before it goes on to Library C.

What I (and-thank goodness for what's left of my sanity- others) have experienced is getting the request (on day one or day two), having the shelf checked, and processing it only to get (on ILLiad anyway) the dreaded yellow RECORD NOT FOUND box of doom telling me the request is no more as far as JPL is concerned.. The OCLC HelpDesk assures me that this means that the borrowing library has cancelled the request. I don't think that's always the case -as some of you have related.

Makes me cranky!

Hmmmmm, so what happens if a request sits 2 days in one's pending file and the 3rd day hits its expiration date? Would it disappear on the 3rd day or does it need to be moving between two positions on the lender string to expire?

No, I asked OCLC just to be sure and there is no way to customize the default 4 days in pending. I think my original assumption was based on the observation (as others mentioned) that a certain proportion of requests disappear prematurely and that I wasn't convinced that all of these were cancellations. Although this would have suggested some kind of customization on the borrower's side, but anyway...

I thought the queues were standardized. I haven't seen a way to adjust
the queue in WCRS. Is this something new?

I was under the impression that lending libraries could adjust the
default "days in pending" so that for instance, instead of the default 4
days, a library could specify that they only wanted requests to sit in
their queue for 2 days before moving on to the next lender in the
string. Is this not so?

I've seen this too. It's really annoying to spend 30 minutes hunting a
missing book, find it in the book repair section, and triumphantly
return to your desk only to have the request for it vanish.

We had one vanish from our queue on day 2, and the borrower swore they
didn't cancel it. We still don't know what happened. :(

I've seen them move prematurely too. It's aggravating when you get a
request in the morning and search the shelves, only to find -when you go
to fill the request that it has gone on. As much as it's happened, I
can't believe that all instances were due to requests getting cancelled.
