[ILL-L] RE: To Rant on Thursday or not to rant

We once had a law library request a Harry Potter book just days before
the book was due to be published. Even if we didn't already have a
bagazillion hold requests on the title, there were compelling reasons
not to fill the request. Foremost among these were: 1) we don't lend
new (or on-order) books (as per our stated policy) and 2) we really
weren't in the mood to be turned into toads as was solemnly promised by
the not-so-fine print on the boxes holding the Potter books.

Folks,

I definitely inhabit a glass house in ILL land so pitching rocks is
usually not my style.

However, I just turned down a request for Pat Conroy's latest, "South of
Broad" from a state clearing house so you are telling me no one there
has this?

If i accepted the request, the borrower would hold place number 902.

We do lend new items but they have to be available

I can also accept the need to please a persistent customer. My wife, a
branch manager, has had a customer request a title held by only two
libraries both European and nonlenders. When told this the customer said
"well, can you please try?"

end of rant and back to our regularly scheduled programming
