I asked OCLC. Deflections are noted as unfills.

How do the deflected items show up in your stats? I thought the idea of
deflection was to avoid that??? Ed.

I brought this issue up to a staff member at the Help Desk. It's
frustrating that -while deflection save us having to manually cancel
requests for materials our ILL Policy statement clearly states we don't
loan, these deflected and cancelled count toward our unfilled. Plus
we're still getting copy requests from libraries that want us to copy a
whole month of newspapers, they requested copies of issues our LHR
clearly showed we don't have, they ask for the loan of -say- The Florida
Times-Union without any specific information like YEAR and ignore that
we don't loan microfilm, give very sketchy information in citations
(though, staff in Periodicals often pick up that thrown down gauntlet
and find it against all odds), or treat ILL as a fishing expedition by
sending us requests for items they think we might have without checking
WorldCat. I realize that there are requests coming through that are
unmediated but it's frustrating that it counts against lenders.

I agree with you, Jeanine, that this is probably a training issue. I
wonder if some libraries have in-depth procedures on how to verify
serial/annual information for journals, proceedings etc ... or has
someone written an article about this topic? The procedure would be
helpful in this environment where library people are retiring and being
replaced by first time ILL librarians and sometimes one person run
libraries.

I don't have an actual number, but the majority of our Unfilleds are
requests that were deflected, thus we never see them. Yes, sometimes
other libraries just don't check our holdings for serials. Our holdings
are right there, you may have to click on it if the statement is too
long for all to show. I don't know if that's a training issue or a lazy
issue or what.
Also, our ejournal titles show in OCLC, but not our holdings. If you
click on our library name, you won't find a match in our catalog because
you have to search it as a periodical. I understand if libraries try us
any way, just in case we have it, but when its for journals from the
1980s or older, chances are it's not available online. I think this is
one of the main issues with ILL and more libraries having their journals
online and licensing agreements to do ILL.
My two cents worth,
Jeanine

I compiled my year-end ILL stats and found a disturbing figure.
Out of curiosity we tracked the number of unfilled requests sent to us
(we were unable to fill for other libraries) by our own set of "Reasons
for No." Almost half of the items we didn't fill for other libraries
were for one of the following reasons:
They didn't have IFM
They asked for volumes/issues we didn't own
In the case of the first category, it was obvious that they didn't check
our policies. For the last category they didn't click on our link to
our catalog to see what we hold.
Does anyone else find this to be true for their unfilled loan requests?
Merle
