[ILL-L] creating an automated ILL system with NO money...

When I worked in a small shop, I created an Access database to track our
borrowing requests. Our tech guy then created a web form for borrowing
requests which sent the requests to my email and I could then import
them to the database. If you have folks around with some web and db
skills, you might be able to pull that off fairly easily and that would
take care of the paper on the borrowing side. I recommend that you rely
on your OPAC to track lending items. Between your record there and the
one on WRS, I wouldn't think you would need to keep much paper around.

Relais International (http://www.relais-intl.com/relais/home/index.htm)
offers their ILL Product (Relais ILL) as open source, but I'm pretty
sure you would need some dedicated, knowledgeable IT folks to support it
on your end.

Good luck!

Could you auto-deflect any loans? That might work so you can at least
lend articles but wouldn't have to actually pay to ship anything.

I don't really have advice on tracking requests other than simply using
OCLC Resource Sharing.

If you wanted to loan books, you could always charge a small fee for
loans but not articles...that might offset any shipping charges. But
that could also decrease your lending since many people search for
lenders by using LVIS.

Just some pre-coffee thoughts...

Holly

You sure could use it for non-returnables only, but my guess is that
you'll want to use it for both, Ed.

Is there a way to join with the status of "non-returnables" only? I
think I've seen some non-USA libraries request or offer to send articles
only - not books.

My guess is that if you join LVIS you'll have to pay some for postage.
We use Clio, which for small operations is only $300 or $350 per year,
but I know some libraries just use WRS,

Greetings ILLers.

I have temporarily been plunged back into the world of libraries, and
one of my new tasks at the library here is to get ILL up and running
again. We are a very small junior college library, which is heavily
underfunded, understaffed and undervalued (IMO). As a result, we have
absolutely NO money in the budget to do anything "extra" such as pay for
shipping other than a few items now and then. We are not even a
supplier on OCLC (something I plan to change very soon), due to the fact
that we have, yes, no money.

Surely we are not the ONLY ILL out there that doesn't have the funds to
purchase either ILLiad or Clio. How have others managed to run their
ILL without killing lots of trees to track materials? I would also be
interested in joining LVIS, but again, cannot do so until I can do a
rough estimate of how much shipping would cost, and then probably apply
to the local Foundation for funds to pay for shipping.

Please feel free to reply only to me, as I'm hoping there aren't a TON
of libraries out there in this situation. I'm feeling rather unhopeful
about the whole state of things, but perhaps there is something out
there that I haven't yet thought of.

Thanks for your help,

Julia (farmer full time, part-time library staff for a bit)
