[ILL-L] Worldcat Accession/OCLC Numbers

Hi Jackie,
I've had this problem as well - mostly from requests coming in through
RILM and RIPM. FirstSearch databases all use accession numbers, but I
think only the WorldCat accession numbers are recognizable to WCRS.
However, they come across in the OpenURL linking to ILLiad, and the
direct requests when you don't have ILLiad. I think the fix would be to
have OCLC stop categorizing the numbers in the same way - the OCLC
number needs to be cataloged in a different way than the accession
number. The problem is worst when the number DOES match, but it's a
completely different item.
For libraries using some kind of OpenURL, there might be a way to fix
this in the mapping tables, but I haven't put the time into it (just
because we don't use direct request so we catch the mismatches), but I
don't know if there is an option for users going directly through
FirstSearch...
Good luck!

Subject: [ILL-L] Worldcat Accession/OCLC Numbers
Have any of you had any trouble with Worldcat.org using different
accession/OCLC numbers than FirstSearch/World Resource Sharing uses? I
had a patron submit an ILL request from ArticleFirst through the
Worldcat.org interface while connected to our university network. When
our ILL dept tried to search/submit it from the review file in WRS, they
received the message "No records matched your search". That is, WRS
didn't recognize the accession/oclc number as it was different than that
brought in from Worldcat.org. Title was:

I reported this to OCLC and was told this is a known issue. However,
I'm wondering what implications this has with their Worldcat Local
"Quick Start" product they are currently promoting, as, I believe, it
uses the Worldcat.org interface.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
