[ILL-L] SCANNER PROBLEM

I would like to share the following with the list, since several people responded that had experienced the same or similar problems:

Recently, I sent an inquiry to the list about our having problems with not being able to use the Automatic Document Feeder on our scanner and could not preview what was being scanned.  A one-page transmission would go through, but more than one page would not and an Assertion failure message would appear and close Ariel.  Several nice people responded and said it could be Windows XP updates that are messing up the registry.  Our IT person ran RegScrubXP on the computer and also reinstalled the scanner.  This solved the problem.

Yesterday, before I left work, I shut down the computer to clear mail error messages in Ariel and got the message about Installing Updates before shutting down.  I let the updates occur in order to see if the ADF problem occurs again.  When I started the computer and opened Ariel and tried to use the ADF-guess what?  No preview and then the Assertion failure window appeared.  I ran RegScrubXP again and low and behold the ADF works again!

So-there must be something that occurs when Windows XP updates get thrown onto the computer(?)  From now on, I will say NO to them, or just run RegScrubXP afterwards.  This is crazy!
