I've had some success in changing the "brightness" setting on my scanner. I've often found that making the scanner "brighter" will get light down into the center of the book allowing me to get scan.

Subject: [ILL-L] Problem scanning books that won't lay flat
Hi List:
I'm encountering problems with scanning certain binded journals that won't lay flat on the book scanner. A clip seems to help in some instances, but not all. How do I overcome this problem, simply photocopy the book? Also, what about books whose text descends into the binding (center) of the book? Thanks
