We have a 60 day loan period for the JPL books we loan other libraries
but do not renew books. We still get asked for renewals- many times
shorty after the requesting library receives the book- even though all
the paperwork states SORRY! NO RENEWALS!
We backdate the due date to one week before it's due back to the lender.
Customers can start requesting a renewal 5 days before the books are
due.
I'm with you, Alison. We would appreciate a response to our notices too.
With the loss of staff and current fiscal problems, we may be forced to
bar libraries after the thrid notice.

True enough as well - I wish more libraries would at least respond to
our overdue notices (that we don't send out until a month overdue) so
that we would at least know that they got it, and whatever is happening
with it (still trying to get it back from the patron and all) but many
many times, we never hear back until we actually send the invoice at 3
months over due.
I just don't like giving "official" renewals when we wouldn't have for
our own students at that point - doesn't seem quite fair - but
"unofficially" - yes we don't have a real problem with that either...

With the usual caveat that we are a small ILL operation, and that things
that work fine for us may well not work at larger ILL offices elsewhere,
may I just point out that we don't routinely need everything to be back
on our shelves by the exact due date. If I can just get a sense that
things are moving towards a return by the renewal due date, that's good
enough here.

If its not too overdue (a day or two) - I'll renew it - but when it's a
week or more overdue? Not so much. (Because we don't renew overdue
books for our students) In a few cases I've had libraries request a
renewal a month after it was due when I sent the overdue notice - I
especially do not renew then, because the one time I did that - it then
was overdue by a month or two again - and it made for a confusing
overdue notice and invoice... Obviously if you finally get a book back
from the patron - then let us know its on its way back - but I don't
think you need to ask for a renewal just for that...
I give our students a due date of a week before the item is due (so that
we have a week for the oh so slow USPS to get the item back to the
borrowing library) and ask that they request all renewals several days
before that. Of course this is not to say that some things don't slip
through the cracks occasionally - but we try our best. (Well I try my
best - I am the ILL department among other things - which is exactly how
things do slip by at times - I'm always jumping all over the place from
one thing to another!)

Ed and all,
The National Code defines due date as the day the item is due back at
the lending library. To the extent I can keep even with renewals, I try
to ask for extensions a week before the due date.
We do not renew borrowed books for our patrons. Our renewal requests
are only to cover the first (and only) 3 week loan period we try to get
for each of our patrons plus the delivery time it will take to get the
book back home.

I was told that it might be a good idea if we requested renewals of
books we have borrowed a day or two before the book was actually due. It
sounded like on the computer system they might not be able to renew
something easily once it was actually overdue.
So, I've been moving the due date up one day on each book we borrow. But
it's kind of labor intensive. Do other libraries act differently on a
renewal request if the book is overdue as opposed to not yet quite due?
