Ed and all,
The National Code defines due date as the day the item is due back at the lending library. To the extent I can keep even with renewals, I try to ask for extensions a week before the due date.
We do not renew borrowed books for our patrons. Our renewal requests are only to cover the first (and only) 3 week loan period we try to get for each of our patrons plus the delivery time it will take to get the book back home.

Subject: [ILL-L] backdating due date
I was told that it might be a good idea if we requested renewals of books we have borrowed a day or two before the book was actually due. It sounded like on the computer system they might not be able to renew something easily once it was actually overdue.
So, I've been moving the due date up one day on each book we borrow. But it's kind of labor intensive. Do other libraries act differently on a renewal request if the book is overdue as opposed to not yet quite due? Thanks,
