[ILL-L] International Shipping to Denmark

I routinely ship to Europe, Australia, Asia, etc. The post office has made
it a lot easier, provided you do as much of the prep as possible online,
rather than filling out forms by hand.

You can fill in & print the customs forms online from the USPS web site
<http://www.usps.com/international/customs.htm>. I always indicate the
material as Other, book, international loan between libraries, no commercial
value (that is, basically same info as is on the required label for Canada).
You may have to get creative with abbreviations. I think Int'l loan betw
libs generally fits. I declare a customs value of $1.00, so if the borrower
does get hit up for duty, it's not too onerous. Finally, I keep a sheet of
labels (I use Avery diskette size labels for this) that read International
Loan Between Libraries, No Commercial Value, printed in the largest Arial
Black that will fit. I stick one on each non-Canadian international
shipment, generally just above the upper left corner of the shipping/customs
label.

I ship global priority flat rate as much as possible, billed back to the
borrower. If the cost is too high, I'll use international first class, again
billed back to the borrower. If you can pay the postage with a departmental
credit card, you can create the shipping/customs label on the USPS web site.
If your mail room has to apply the postage separately, you can download the
USPS Shipping Assistant <
http://www.usps.com/shippingassistant/welcome.htm?from=CNS&page=shippingassi
stant>, which will allow you to keep an address book and print both domestic
and international shipping and customs documentation without postage. It
also knows which forms you need, so it will always print the correct ones
based on your selection of shipping form, package weight, and type of
postage.
