In August for lending cancellations
Requests finished: 56%
Branch policy 20.83%
In use/On loan 14.98%
Not owned 6.93%
Everything else- less than !%

We supply lists "not owned" titles to Tech Services for removal from
WorldCat and to Collection Development and Main subject departments for
purchase consideration. Here- 6 months is the normal time period for a
book to go from missing to being removed.

Winnie, our stats show 19% for "in use on loan," 17% for
"non-circulating," 14% for "not on shelf," and 10% each, for "lost" and
"volume issue not yet available." Quite a few not on shelf! And the
lost books are so high because our circulation staff keeps records in
the database for three years after determined missing. What a pain for
me and other libraries! I make your stats look great!

I have been looking at our usage statistics for borrowing and lending,
but mostly I'm interested in lending right now. I've been comparing the
percentage of unfilled requests with a reason of "in use on loan" vs.
any other reason for no. What I'm finding is that between 30-40% of our
unfilled requests are because of some other reason than the material
being checked out to local patrons. Occasionally these are policy
problems, but mostly it is because our materials are either lost or not
on the shelf, etc. which really bothers me. Has anyone else done any
study similar to this and if so, would you be willing to share your
findings with me? I'm just curious to know if this is normal.

Thanks,
Winnie
