Here's an update on the water damage situation at Emory University's Woodruff Library (EMU). Please pardon any duplication....
I'm happy to announce that ILL staff have had limited access to the water-damaged floors since Wednesday and that we have almost full access to all of the floors as of today. The shelving on the affected floors is all compact w/electronic controls which has made recovery more complicated than would have been the case with standard shelving. Level 4 is open to the public as of today but levels 5 & 6 likely will not be open to the public until Tuesday, Sept 9th.
Here's what happened: A fire sprinkler system valve failure over Labor Day weekend temporarily closed Levels 4 through 6 of the Robert W. Woodruff Library building's stack tower where call numbers HM-LT and N-Z are housed. The valve failure was in a fire closet and sent water onto the floor of Level 6. The water then seeped through to Levels 5 & 4 below. Crews have been working on water removal and drying of floors and shelving since the Sun., Aug. 31 incident. Most of the collections on those floors escaped water damage. Approximately 2,300 books are being treated for water damage, 78 percent of them (1,800) in-house by Emory University Libraries' Conservation Lab team.
So, not the greatest way to start fall term but it definitely could have been a lot worse!
Have a great weekend,
Margaret
