[ILL-L] Bookstrap Question - both

Holly,

We place our own strap on all borrowed books.

We don't have a preference for how lending libraries handle the strap/label/paper work issue; I think that decision should be driven by their own workflow needs.

However, what goes around in this business comes around, and I greatly urge all lenders to provide the information that makes it easier and not harder to borrow and return your material.

What we need from the lender may be slightly different for different borrowers, but it is all included on the WRS request form so please include either a copy of the form or your own customized printout that includes:
your oclc symbol
the oclc request number, preferably including barcode format
the title
the patron name
the name of the library that is borrowing this book or their oclc symbol (so we can more easily forward misdirected items)
a RETURN LABEL or your RETURN ADDRESS IN BLOCK FORMAT usable by the library that receives it
due date and any restrictions

Being a conscientious lender helps insure that the borrowing side of your ILL office will be the ultimate recipient of your good work.

Ok, next question...

Do you prefer that the borrowed book come with or without a bookstrap, if you are going to put your own strap over it anyway?
Do you prefer that the book is just sent with some identifying information, such as the ILL number, etc?

Holly

We'll put our normal label for ILL requests our patrons borrow over whatever the lender provides. The lender's label won't have your contact info for renewals, you might want to provide your patron with a due date earlier than what's printed on the strap, and there might not necessarily even be anything that indicates that the book was an ILL provided by you and should be returned to you. There's probably at least a couple more other solid reasons to provide your own bookstrap/label, but I'm sure there's also setups that make these reasons redundant depending on what other systems you're using.
