[ILL-L] Ultrafiche

Ed,

We greatly appreciate those conditionals. We know what ultrafiche is and that there is no reader for it in our library or anywhere else in our town. Your message helps us avoid an unnecessary transaction.

We usually don't know for certain that a bib record is referring to ultrafiche, since it says 'microfiche', and are even less certain what the cataloger in the holding library meant when they attached their holdings, since the record does say 'microfiche'.

We get a handful of requests for our LAC and LEL ultrafiche collections
each week (85X magnification, I think). I send it to libraries that have
borrowed it before, but if they haven't, I condition and ask 'This is
ultrafiche 85X, do you want to borrow it?' And I seldom get a response
back saying that they want it. Is it because they ordered the ultrafiche
by accident, or a student ordered it by accident directly? Or do most
libraries not have ultrfiche? Or do most libraries not know what
ultrafiche is and I'm not explaining it well enough? Thanks,

Upgrading Ariel won't help - apparently no version of Ariel is
compatible with Vista. The good news is that Ariel can be made to
function on a Vista machine. We just upgraded our Ariel pc to one which
has Vista. Our Ariel 3.3 does work with it, but our IT people had some
difficulty getting it to operate. Also, it's not very stable -- when
the pc is shut down for any reason, we sometimes need IT to bring Ariel
up again. But we can still use it.

We are in the process of upgrading our Ariel computer. We are currently
using version 3.4 and are not planning on upgrading at this time. Has
anyone successfully used Ariel 3.4 with Vista? I have tried to get on
the archives of Ariel-L but cannot. Also, what scanners have you have
success with. Thanks in advance for any help you can give us.
