[ILL-L] Apology in advance

Swooning- I forgot to mention swooning. Which is what we did when we realized that the box of mailers were not our beloved bubble mailers but those unsavory pretenders. <Yeah- that's about it for the drama, Paul.>

JPL is not posting its ILL holiday schedules either (such as they are), preferring the element of surprise.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Heather,

I can't think of an appropriate response to this truly horrible news. I think the ILL community will eventually forgive JPL, but some of us may not forget. <<enough drama yet??>>

This reminds me that we currently have 3 cases of size #0 of the fluff-stuffed mailers. They were here when I arrived and will still be here whenever I depart.

BTW:I will NOT be posting our holiday schedule. We will be lower case when not availqable.

My friends,

Our Supply person mis-ordered the #5 size of our mailers and -to our abject horror and sorrow- we found that she had ordered the dastardly, insidious fluff-stuffed mailers instead of the well-favored bubble mailers.  We have spoken to said Supply person and she has vowed never to repeat the mistake again.  We sincerely hope this is a vow she will keep but we, too, have to use these blasted things until they run out.

Please- when you think of us while opening these our misbegotten mailers - and you will-be kind.

One more, thing before I can put this conversation to bed....we use these:

Are these the same thing?  They are not as bulky as some that I have seen come through.  This is what we have right now.

thanks for this conversation, certainly something we need to consider.  In the meantime my apologies b/c we have boxes of these to use first!

We also only reuse jiffy bags (the messy ones) to return loans received in them. We've also witnessed how they fail to stay intact when mail is delivered on a rainy day. They're awful.

We use bubble mailers & boxes to ship.

Doesn't surprise me (about the "No Jiffy" yet sent in one) - I don't know how many items we borrow from other libraries and receive in Jiffy Bags that are already being reused - talk about messy ! (obviously talking about the filled Jiffy bags and not the bubble ones =) here).

I will reuse Jiffy bags when they're in good enough shape - but only reusing the one the item was originally sent in, not for any that weren't sent in a Jiffy (and not for sending out our own books) - I figure if you don't mind inflicting Jiffy bags on the rest of us, you can't complain if we send your book back to you in one as well =)

But then we're small enough that I typically save the envelopes things came in for them to go back in (as long as they're still in good enough shape) so that I can be assured that I am sending it back in the same manner they sent it...

But we'd certainly never put "No Jiffy" in our constant record - it may be irritating - but that's ever library's choice...

Messy?  Oh yes.  Very messy.  Sometimes, rarely, the envelope come intact.  But again, rarely.  Usually they are punctured.  One little puncture or tear and you have got a huge mess.  Ever try to get jiffy bag stuffing off your clothes, desk, floor, and (the worst) out of the book itself?  Not fun at all.  And then that stuff makes you sneeze . . . And, for some reason, jiffy bags travel in packs, you never get just one in a delivery (why is that?).  As for sturdiness, I don't think one beats out the other.  So, yes, it does matter if its messy, we don't like it when our books come back full of jiffy bag stuffing (especially DVDs and videos).  I don't use jiffy and neither do I reuse, I wish no one would use them.

To add, I got a book today with a note on it that said "No Jiffy".  Guess what it was sent in?  Yep, a jiffy bag.

Ok, I have to ask...for those who do say no paperfilled jiffy bags, why?  Is it b/c they can be messy?  Or is there another reason?

If you pull the tab, they don't spill all over.  Personally, that is what we use most of the time.  They are recycled and recyclable and I've found are much more sturdy than bubble bags.  Plus they are budget friendly.

I love the idea of reusable bags but they are pricey.  I have been thinking about just using boxes as they are reusable and recyclable.

I guess I just don't understand...if the book gets to you in good shape, does it really matter if its a little messy?
