[ILL-L] Quick survey re: end of term due dates

Our borrowing ILLs are due 4 days prior to lender's due date - regardless of
where that due date falls in our academic calendar.  We have a large number
of adult and graduate students who remain in the campus area during the
inter-term holidays and need to continue using their ILL items during this
time period (independent studies, directed inquiries, internships and theses
do not necessarily happen within one term).  Two weeks before the end of
term we start sending out reminder notices to all students with outstanding
ILL items, reminding them to return the items before they leave town for the
holidays.  Because the library is open during much of the inter-term
holidays, we do not waive overdue fines so students have an incentive to
return the items before they leave.
While we do not alter our due date procedures, we do stop requesting items
for our patrons approximately one month before the end of the term.  We've
found that this keeps items from arriving after students have left for the
holidays AND gives my staff and I the extra time we need to deal with the
influx of returning ILL items.  As with any ILL policy at this institution,
however, this cut off date might be waived for certain situations (like
journal articles, or a professor who suddenly changes his final from an exam
to a paper...) or certain patrons (like students working on their senior or
graduate theses).
