Andrew,
If you write a mission statement for ILL and put it in your web pages, you
can refer the user to your written policy. You might say that interlibrary
loan is for research and that it is too expensive for providing textbooks
or leisure reading. MIT has an excellent mission statement you can read by
clicking on interlibrary borrowing. When students argue with you about
what constitutes research in respect to your policy, you can suggest that
they visit nearby public libraries or show them some websites that sell
textbooks for discount prices. I always try to offer alternatives to users
instead of getting into the argument about "appropriateness" of certain
materials. We have a few users who request romance novels and few others
that request new bestsellers. We have faculty who request books on
antiques and genealogy. So far, we have not had a lot of abuse in the
recreational reading/hobbist categories. The requestors of the romance
novels always return them long before the due dates!

Subject: [ILL-L] Help w/webpage wording
Sent by: ill-l-bounces at webjunction.org
Hi all,
Thought I'd provide a change of pace from the normal citation help and
ask for help with some webpage wording. Lately I've had a number of
students that are trying to use ILL to obtain popular music items,
weight loss tapes, and basically things that aren't related to school
work. Basically I'm trying to find some good wording to say we won't
request items for personal/popular usage in the way of weight-loss
tapes or popular musicians.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks
