[ILL-L] BNY and NYP to merge

I thought NYP only had the no-loan restriction with its research
libraries ( As in: The regulations of our Trustees do not permit the
lending of print material from the collections of The Research
Libraries. )
As Jeanine noted- you'll need to decide if the combined ILL entity will
be an LVIS library or not. That will affect your operations and your
services if you'll be charging other libraries for ILL. Keep in mind
that there are libraries with a policy of "We charge what you charge".
If you start charging for loans or charge for photocopies -and are no
longer and LVIS library- expect to take on the extra burden of those
charges or prepare your customers and let them know the services they
got for free with BKL as a LVIS library will now come at a direct cost
to them.
You're both Enter My Symbol Twice libraries- with NYP noted as only
being that for photocopies.
There are other considerations that come to mind:
*
Does BKL and NYP have the same ILL management software? If not,
which software will you use? If so- is it powerful enough to take on
the extra incoming and outgoing requests?
*
What relationships and reciprocal arrangements have the seperate
ILL offices cultivated with other libraries?
*
Also- there's a PR angle to the merger. Granted, compared to us
you all are a considerably larger operation but some of your clientele
may have developed a personal relationship with ILL staff and
vice-versa. Material or monetary contributions may be affected by
changes in or the cosolidation of the ILL offices resulting from the
merger.
*
Internal policies and procedures of the different offices may
clash.

I'm curious how you will be handling your different ILL policies for
these two libraries. BNY is LVIS, will loan books but not make
photocopies. NYP charges for ILL, will make photocopies but will not
loan books. Seems like the two would complement each other, but with
all your holdings under one symbol, how will we know if a book or
photocopy is an option? Just something to think about, which I'm sure
you already have. Good luck with your merger.

The New York Public Library is going through a transformative
time. We are
closing the divide between the research libraries and the
circulating
libraries and becoming One NYPL.
As part of the process of bringing together the library, we are
merging our
OCLC symbols sometime in the Spring of 2009.
While you can imagine we have been brainstorming all the effects
this will
have, and have been working closely with our regional service
providers, I
am curious about how this will effect ILL.
Any comments, concerns, and even encouragement <grin> at this
point is
welcome.
We want to remain an asset to the library community and I am
sure there are
implications that I have not even begun to consider. A formal
announcement
will be made down the road, but I value any input.
Thank you,
Matthew
