I'm not an academic librarian (but I played one for a year) so I'll speak from the user side. My grad school, University of South Florida, let us alums have limited checkout privileges for $35.00/yr, no ILL and had a community borrowers card for $50. This was back in 1998 when I left Florida (sob).
Here in Charlotte, UNC Charlotte has a community borrower's card for $35/yr. Not a bad deal IMHO.
My undergrad. well they might let us in to look around while always telling us "send money".

We allow our local alumni to borrow books from our library. They are only allowed to check out two books the first time and then are limited to 10 at a time after that. I don't think we've had a great deal of problems with the alumni borrowing from our collection. They obtain overdue fines if they don't bring the book back and are required to pay replacement charges if they lose the item.

We haven't had a large request from our alumni for interlibrary loan items, but we do process them when they come in and ask. In my experience, the alumni are conscientious of the due dates and bring their materials back. In general I find that the alumni that do use interlibrary loan used it heavily when they were a student here.

Hi,
This is a question for academic libraries only. Here we have been grappling with the question of whether to let our alumni borrow our books. I would like to ask what were the policies in other colleges and universities. We fear that, since we don't have any sway over them, we may lose some of our books if we lend them to alumni. If you are lending, do you do so free of charge or in return for a contribution or a fee?

I will be grateful to hear from others.

Thank you,
