At our college, we welcome alumni (or any visitors) to use our books, videos, etc. in the library, but they can't borrow our books unless they join our Friends of the Library (which cost $25 a year). If they want to take our books home, I give them printouts and tell them they can go to our local public library (a few blocks away) and we'll ILL the books to them through the public library.

Subject: [ILL-L] Do you let your alumni borrow books?
Hi,
This is a question for academic libraries only. Here we have been grappling with the question of whether to let our alumni borrow our books. I would like to ask what were the policies in other colleges and universities. We fear that, since we don't have any sway over them, we may lose some of our books if we lend them to alumni. If you are lending, do you do so free of charge or in return for a contribution or a fee?
I will be grateful to hear from others.
Thank you,
