[ILL-L] Net lender vs. Net Borrower

I would hope that net lenders don't curtail their service. One of the
features of interlibrary loan that I have always seen is that it is
community outreach or support from the institution. For example, I'm happy
to do whatever we can for Louisiana libraries - including loan of unused
reference titles. We did the same when I worked at a large county library in
Kansas - we tried to do whatever we could for Kansas libraries. I'd make
sure that the paperwork with the request prominently had the University's
name, maybe something with the university slogan ("Excellence With a
Personal Touch") or website even - good PR.

Years ago I worked at a library that was so happy to finally be a net lender
after decades of being a net borrowing.

If we need to lend 20 av items and only get five we need, I'm very happy to
get the five we need.

If a net borrowing, somethings I'd look at are:

Formats, collections not currently loaned, such as av or special
collection. We can still be selective if needed.

Adding local holdings to periodicals. We were able to do that 18
months ago. The number of article requests decreased about 15%, but we are
providing twice as many article requests.

Reasons for "NO" report from OCLC. Are there any patterns,
reoccurring reasons. If a lot are Not in collection, Lost, or missing, it
may indicate a need to clean up OCLC holdings.

Subject: [ILL-L] Net lender vs. Net Borrower

What is the impacts or implications of being largely net borrower (or
lender) for a medium to large academic institution? Should I be concerned
about finding ways to bring lending and borrowing numbers more in line with
each other? Thanks for you suggestions.
