[ILL-L] OCLC statistical reports

I came to ILL after many years on the public service desk and having charge of the paperback and compact disk (music) budgets for my unit. At the time of my transfer, I was a member of the Fiction Collection Development Committee. I saw the huge potential ILL has to provide information about gaps and enhancements to the library's collections. Our library's director directed that I submit ordering information for books published in the current and previous calendar years. This has since been scaled back to books published in the current calendar year.

When we began using ILLiad, I provided lists of items we no longer owned so that the books could be reordered and removed from the OCLC database. When we upgraded to ILLiad 7.3,I played around with the new WorldCat information portion of the Borrowing ILLiad Reports. This allows downloading into an Excel spreadsheet. Right now, playing with it was labor-intensive but I could give them a graphic representation (as in pie chart) of what our customers were asking for using ILL. This would have been more helpful a few years ago when we were in the midst of a growth spurt and had money to plug the gaps in our collections.

Last month- as part of our cost-cutting moves- I was told to stop asking the branches for books and to rely on Main Library's collection. I now run a report of what we couldn't supply because only the branches owned a title or the title was only currently available from a branch. This report can be used to plug gaps in and enhance Main's collection.

Subject: [ILL-L] OCLC statistical reports

Hi everyone!

Are any of you manipulating data provided in the OCLC Resource Sharing
Usage Statistics reports in a clever way? That is, to go beyond what is
presented; especially to reveal data useful for collection development.

Thank you for sharing!
