Rice University, a private university located in Houston, Texas, is 
seeking a highly motivated librarian to provide innovative leadership 
in both conceptualizing and implementing public and instructional 
services across a large, complex, rapidly changing information 
landscape. The AUL is expected to take a strong leadership role in 
developing new services and assessment strategies.
The position is part of the Library's senior management team and 
reports to the Vice Provost and University Librarian

Responsibilities:   The AUL for Public Services will coordinate and 
lead the activities of the following departments: Access Services, 
Document Delivery, Government Information, Reference, and Special 
Collections. Staff in these departments includes 15 librarians and 33 
staff members. The AUL will have: responsibility for policy making in 
all these units, direct responsibility for hiring, training, and 
managing professional and non-exempt staff in these areas, including 
setting priorities, establishing performance standards and goals, and 
reviewing completed assignments. The AUL will be responsible for longer 
term planning and strategic development of these units and the 
functions they perform.  The AUL will work closely with other library 
units to assure coherent policy making and execution as well as overall 
forward movement toward the library's expressed goals and objectives, 
serve routinely on standing and ad hoc library and university 
committees, participate in university-wide initiatives to promote and 
advance the Libraries' role in the academic community, and develop 
innovative educational and outreach programs that support information 
fluency, learning, research and teaching.

Qualifications and experience:
Required:  Master's degree from an ALA-accredited Library and 
Information Science program; seven (7) years of progressively 
responsible experience within a large academic library, managing or 
directing public service programs. Demonstrated experience working with 
emerging information technologies, as well as experience with 
supervision and budget management.  Knowledge of trends in scholarly 
communication in higher education; strong leadership, communication, 
analytical and decision making skills; demonstrated ability to work 
well with faculty, staff, students, and administrators. Demonstrated 
ability to work both independently and with teams.  
Preferred:   An additional graduate degree is preferred.  A record of 
demonstrated collegial leadership in initiating and leading user-based 
library and information services and programs, including web-based 
digital services and resources. Ability to be effective in planning, 
oversight and administration.  Demonstrated commitment to staff 
development and continuing education; excellent oral and written 
communication skills; proven ability to solve problems; ability to 
conceptualize technological transformations in the workplace and their 
implications for public services; ability to recommend solutions in 
areas not under direct supervision.  

Salary & benefits: $85,000 minimum, with hiring salary commensurate 
with experience and qualifications; no state or local income tax; 21 
benefit days; 8 study days; a range of retirement options including 
TIAA/CREF; health and life insurance; and tuition waiver.
