[ILL-L] Ariel versus E-Mail

Unless we are sending directly from ariel to another ariel IP address, I
email the document to our ILL email then forward to the borrowing
library.
The reasoning is because I would find that documents would not make it
to the email, and I would get phone calls and not received messages.
This has reduced resending items in a major way.
It takes about one extra minute per transaction but the time it saves in
the long run is well worth it, I think.

We would have problems with just e-mail since our patrons sometimes
don't have big enough e-mails to handle the PDF, hence sending through
the Ariel.

Subject: [ILL-L] Ariel versus E-Mail
At our library, we're seeing a shift from heavy usage of Ariel to
e-mailed PDFs, both sending and receiving. In fact, due to the very
slow functioning of our Ariel scanner, all outgoing items are being sent
by e-mail. (With a copyright cover letter, but without the cover page
indicating the patron, since e-mail isn't secure.)
Additionally, we find that we need to re-situate our Ariel system and
wonder if it's worth the cost to do so. Our IT people say that the
future is web-based and perhaps Ariel may not be as effective as it once
was.
Our library director is curious what other libraries are doing in this
regard, and we were unable to find anything in the archives that
addressed the issue. Hence, this e-mail...
