[ILL-L] Ariel versus E-Mail

Hello!

Last summer (in June 2007), I posted the question on the ILL Listserv:
"Working without Ariel (is it possible?)" I didn't get many responses
in regards to using email as an alternative. I felt I got an equal
amount of responses in regards to Odyssey versus Ariel. There are some
that want to switch over to Odyssey entirely, and others that want to
stay with Ariel.

Our campus recently upgraded our copier machines, and we were able to
get the added function of emailing PDFs from the copier machine. As a
lender, we use the copier machine's email function if the borrowing
library does not have Ariel. In fact, if our Ariel scanner dies (God
forbid!) or if something happened to our Ariel PC, we are prepared to
use the copier machine/email as a back up.

IMHO, Ariel use (for my library and campus) is more necessary for us on
the borrowing side. When we receive a document for our patrons, we can
post it to a web server. Although there are work-arounds for this,
there a great many Ariel libraries, and being able to post a document is
inherent to our operation. We consistently borrow from Ariel libraries
for this purpose alone. Right now, our library can post to a web server
using a really old version of Prospero (soon to be Relais - we are in
the process of switching over). So, using Odyssey, for us, doesn't
help. We need the post-to-web function, and that isn't part of the free
version of Odyssey.

Best Regards,

Subject: [ILL-L] Ariel versus E-Mail

At our library, we're seeing a shift from heavy usage of Ariel to
e-mailed PDFs, both sending and receiving. In fact, due to the very
slow functioning of our Ariel scanner, all outgoing items are being sent
by e-mail. (With a copyright cover letter, but without the cover page
indicating the patron, since e-mail isn't secure.)

Additionally, we find that we need to re-situate our Ariel system and
wonder if it's worth the cost to do so. Our IT people say that the
future is web-based and perhaps Ariel may not be as effective as it once
was.

Our library director is curious what other libraries are doing in this
regard, and we were unable to find anything in the archives that
addressed the issue. Hence, this e-mail...
