[ILL-L] ILL Faux Pas

That depends your situation. I can't change policy because the policy
was set by our Library Board. I can only suggest changes. And our
network ILL policy also bars using ILL in place of good Collection
Development or to fill holds.
I agree- this depends upon the situation and the setting. If there are
40 other JPL customers on the holds list for the book and this customer
doesn't want to wait his/her turn, that's different from needing the
book for a thesis or dissertation. Obviously, we should get more copies
of this book STAT to help fill those holds and we have a mechanism in
place to do just that. In this public library setting, we haven't gotten
any requests citing that they need it for a thesis or dissertation.
I'm covering for staff in Lending this week and am seeing a lot of
requests for The Shack from across the country. All of our copies are
in use. When an out-of-print Cyril Hare book was recommended in a Wall
Street Journal article, owning libraries were innundated with requests
for loans. Even if a customer requests the book through ILL because
your copy is checked out, the request may not be filled.

Thank you for your input so far! Good point on that it might be in use
by another library.
I think we have a policy against it but I'm the "Coordinator" now so I
can change it, right? :)

And to add another variant to this scenario: what if the item is on loan
to another library?
Yes, there is recall, but that usually takes the same amount of time as
getting another copy from another library.
This happens so infrequently in my experience that making an ILL request
is good customer service. One more request to process wouldn't be a
burden.
But each library has its own practices, so various approaches are just
as valid - I'm getting philosophical, and it is only Thursday morning.
Have a great day!

Say I have a patron who needs a book. We own it but right now it is
checked out. Its on hold, but she needs it before its due back. (Of
course.)
Why is it an ILL Faux Pas to ILL it? Or is it not really a huge deal?
I hate to tell her sorry, you'll have to go buy it.
Thanks!
