[ILL-L] ILL Faux Pas

We all want to serve our patrons to the best of our abilities, and I don't consider it to be a ILL faux pas. I doubt this happens very often. But, I would take the following into consideration:
If the item was nearing its due date I would send a recall notice to the borrowing library, but if the item in question wasn't nearing its due date, (or the borrower was in Hawaii, Alaska or out-of-country...would take a while for it to be returned via mail) I'd send out an ILL request.
Other options I'd consider: the possibility of putting in a rush request to purchase a 2nd copy if the item in question is heavily used, or for any other reason you see the need for another copy. Your supplier may be able to get the item to you faster than going through the ILL process.

Say I have a patron who needs a book. We own it but right now it is checked out. Its on hold, but she needs it before its due back. (Of course.)
Why is it an ILL Faux Pas to ILL it? Or is it not really a huge deal? I hate to tell her sorry, you'll have to go buy it.
Thanks!
