[ILL-L] Re: ILL book requests purchase procedure- a caveat

I wouldn't throw ILL out just yet. Last December, a representative of
OCLC-UK was at the Florida Resource Sharing Conference.  She told about
two large public libraries in the UK who decided they would buy instead
of participating in ILL. One of them was back in the ILL fold by the
next year.  There are a lot of books out there that are out of print but
still in demand.  I call it the Keziah Dane Effect.  Keziah Dane is a
book Sue Grafton wrote in her pre-alphabetical mystery days.  It is no
longer in print.  Prices for used copies START at $62.70.  Unless your
institution has deep pockets, you may want to consider an alternative-
namely- only use ILL if the needed item is out of print or not available
at an affordable price.

There is a good article you could consult in the Journal of Interlibrary
Loan, Document Delivery & Electronic Reserve, vol. 18 (3) 2008, which
just arrived on my desk. "Purchasing or Borrowing:  Making Interlibrary
Loan Decisions That Enhance Patron Satisfaction" by David Zopfi-Jordan.
There is a helpful list of criteria that would help one make the
decision whether to purchase instead of borrow.
