Maybe I'm going crazy, but searching by ISSN in firstsearch doesn't seem
to be
working the way it used to. If I select ISSN as the search term and put
in a
print ISSN, I get only print results, and only electronic results for an

electronic ISSN. If I select just standard number rather than ISSN
specifically, then I'll get both, plus everything else than has the ISSN

anywhere in the standard number field (such as series ISSN.) Now before
when
I selected ISSN and put in either a print or electronic ISSN number, I
got the
results for both (well, and microfilm/fiche etc too) without a lot of
supplemental entries. Am I just missing something obvious here? It
seems
like before I was getting results that, for my purposes, were what I
wanted:
results with either that ISSN or that number in the "Other Format's
ISSN"
field. Now I can get either just a strict ISSN match, or a match to
entries
with that number anywhere in the standard number field.

I've been using the standard number field for ISSN and ISBN searches
since one can tab to it, and it's been OK. Thanks for the info. on how
it works, Ed.

Hi All,

Our Odyssey scanner is down and we don't have any timeline on when it
will
be fixed. We will send articles via Ariel whenever possible, but the
rest
will have to go by fax or snail mail. Thank you for your patience.

Hi,

I was cleaning out a desk, and I pulled out 13 of the old ALA
Interlibrary Loan Request carbon forms. We haven't used them in over
3 years, and I'm planning to get rid of them. It feels wasteful to
just throw them out. Does anyone need them? If yes, please respond
off-list and I'll send them out to you. I'll even send them
internationally, but only by regular US postal mail.

I think that's probably pretty close to a miracle. The whole idea
behind a
PDF file is that it's an uneditable file type. If the document you're
trying to convert doesn't have too much formatting, you can copy and
paste
the text into a word document (this works better sometimes than others
and
I'm absolutely not sure about the legality of it).

Thank you! You are all so helpful!

btw this was a general faculty question, not having to do with ILL
really. I just knew you all are a wealth of knowledge so I used you as
my personal wikipedia.

I think that's probably pretty close to a miracle. The whole idea
behind a PDF file is that it's an uneditable file type. If the document
you're trying to convert doesn't have too much formatting, you can copy
and paste the text into a word document (this works better sometimes
than others and I'm absolutely not sure about the legality of it).

Thank you!

Is there a way to convert the pdf to a word file that you can edit...as
in not read only? Or is that asking for a miracle?

I've used this site before:
http://www.freepdfconvert.com/convert_pdf_to_source.asp
with good results. It's free and seems to be able to genuinely take the
PDF image and turn it into a word document.

Hello everyone,

Sorry for cross posting!

The power is out at GH0 and they're still working on the
problem. It went out Tuesday night at about 10 pm Pacific
time, so please keep that in mind if you've sent us
something. It may also be best to put us last in the
lender string. Sorry for the inconvenience! I'll let
ya'll know when it comes back up. Thanks very much for
your patience.

Good morning everyone,

Is anyone willing to loan the August 28, 1966 issue of the Washington
Post? ... which is likely on 'non-circulating' microform with other
issues. I have a professor who needs to check references for the book
he is writing based on his dissertation. It would be LUO and a short
loan period would be fine.

Thanks in advance,

Phyllis Kroupa

Adobe Acrobat (the full version, not the reader) will export a pdf to
a Word file. A couple of caveats, though--1) if the pdf was mostly
graphics, those will not be editable (some I've done weren't even
viewable except in print preview and 2) the exported document is
actually in rtf (rich-text format), meaning that some, but not all,
of the formatting is retained. They are, however, fully editable.

Most read-only Word files can be converted to read/write by using
"save as" to save them to a new file name. Sometimes you can change
them by simply right-clicking on the file name (in the My Documents
window, Windows Explorer, whatever your favorite way of viewing your
file/folder contents is), selecting properties, and deselecting the
read-only check box.
