Kathy,
How do you handle the vendors whose license agreement state you have to print the e-journal article then send it?

Chris,
At EMU, we have pretty much eliminated paper copying. We send over 99%
of our articles electronically. For e-journal articles, we used to
print them out first and then re-scan them into Odyssey & Ariel, but I
have started converting them to a .tif file and then importing them
directly into Odyssey or Ariel, or just emailing the .pdf. Also, we no
longer photocopy articles to fax, as we don't use our fax machine
anymore. Similarly, for photocopies of articles from microfilm or
microfiche, our library has a microform reader/printer that scans
directly to a file. We save the file to our flash drive, and then
convert it to .tif and import it into Odyssey or Ariel or email. This
not only saves paper, but the file is better quality that what we were
getting by printing.
We only use recycled paper in our printers. We recycle all cardboard
boxes (that can't be reused) and paper-filled Jiffy bags. Also, we
reuse almost all of the cardboard boxes that come in for our outgoing
mail, virtually eliminating the need to purchase new cardboard boxes for
shipping. The bubble wrap Jiffy bags we reuse as packing material
instead of popcorn. But, we do have a trash bin that we use to collect
incoming popcorn to reuse--we never throw that stuff away. And, we save
all rubber bands that come in to reuse--I can't remember a time when we
have had to purchase rubber bands!
For years our library & university have had a very extensive recycling
program, so all unused paper, cardboard, aluminum cans and plastic
bottles get recycled by the university.
I am looking forward to reading your article to see how others are
incorporating green practices into ILL.
