We very specifically do not allow required texts for classes to be
ordered on ILL, ever since we had a few patrons who realized that our
max overdue cost of $25 was cheaper than the price of the book
itself. They kept them for the entire semester (16 weeks).
Made us REAL popular with the lending libraries.
I would be hesitant to do this, not only because you would be hitting
so many libraries to get the multiple copies, but you also cannot
guarantee how long the patrons could keep the book.
On the flip side, we get about 3-5 requests a DAY from other
libraries for a new textbook ("Investments") that is in our reference
section. It's obvious it's a required text for a class, because many
of the requests are coming from the same few libraries over and over
and over again.
I know others feel strongly about this on the opposite side, but a
part of attending college is that you are expected to buy books for
class. There are so many online options these days, students can get
books for cheaper than their campus bookstore. My students were
telling me about how they can get their required books (including
fiction) for so much cheaper now online.
>What about copyright concerns?
I'm not sure it would apply in the case of a fiction title, since
you're not actually copying the item.
Just my $.02
