[ILL-L] return address labels

Heather, I have the same problem here. Oh, they love the borrowing side,
all right...but given their 'druthers, admin would cut lending off at the
knees if they could get away with it.

They know it's important on principle, but it's an expense that they see as
having no benefit to us.

ILL is not viewed as a core function and I think some decision-makers see
the service as a frill. I just gave a presentation on Disaster Response from
the ILL perspective last month; our plan had been approved in 2004. I was
3/4 of the way into preparing for the presentation when -during a
conversation with a member of the Admin team- I mentioned what I was
speaking on and talked about the ILL contingency plan for continuing
service- when I was told about ILL's place in the great scheme of things. It
wasn't pretty. So- I'm struggling with doing the best with what we have. ILL
is a popular service. We more than doubled the volume of successful
Borrowing fills in a year. Lending went up 10%. We get good feedback. I
recently saw the figures for how much we pay vendors for ILLiad and OCLC and
our courier service and also saw how much is paid vendors for Government
Documents, Talking Books, and our Foundation Center. We're one of the less
expensive operations.

I am also finding that fewer libraries are including a return address label.
Why have some libraries stopped sending them? This morning I returned five
books and had to make a label for each one. This is time consuming. I like
it when libraries include a return address label.
What do others think?

I only receive return address labels with a few of the books that we borrow,
and bookstraps frequently do not include either a symbol or a return address
for the lending institution (and typically the paperwork does). Also, the
paperwork helps me keep track of the books that we currently have out. I
would vote not to get rid of it.

Do you think we should ban paperwork except for book straps and return
address labels? The paperwork seems to duplicate what's on the book strap.
Just an idea, Ed.
