[ILL-L] Copies of Copies...Ill Infraction or...?

The copyright law allows the library to get that copy for the use of the
patron for whom it is being requested.

If your staff person is getting these copies as a result of ILL related
work, it would seem to be a violation of that clause, since multiple
copies result, for the use of more than one person, from that single ILL
request. A solution would be for your employee to make requests for
these articles as a patron (resulting, yes, in soliciting a second copy
from an owning library, and possibly additional fees). What is legal is
not always what is most convenient or cheapest.

There could be implications about privacy. Why is your employee making
these copies? As library workers we all see material that interests us
only because we work in the library, because a patron has requested
something we might otherwise have never known existed. We also know
that we do remember what some of our patrons are working on (books
arrive with no information, and we can find our records on it because
we know who is the baseball guy and who is the history of hat design
guy). However, we need to be mindful to use this information only for
work related purposes and that maintaining our patron's privacy is part
of our job description. I would be careful about jumping to conclusions
about the employee's intent, but I would also be careful to discuss the
privacy issue with him/her.

Hello all,

I'm new to the *serv but wondered if you might be able to help with a
current quandary. I've noticed recently that a student worker is taking
ILL requests that we have submitted for other students and making a
personal copy for herself. Is there an issue with this? I mean. There
are several issues that come to mind...but should I make a big deal out
of it?

Thanks for any help and/or advice.

Jess
