[ILL-L] Getting around age deflection

Unfortunately, they're an in-state library and we have some state
network obligations. I did add more to the Conditional note I sent
back asking them why they erased the information. They did not answer my
question. We lend a lot more to them than they do to us. My Lending
staff is looking for OCLC #-less requests and for requests from this
library. They haven't asked again. I had another Florida ask me who it
was and am very willing to share that info off-list.
This experience did point up a flaw in the system- that information like
OCLC numbers and dates can be deleted from online ILL forms and sent out
to get around deflection. I don't know of any reason or advantage to
libraries being able to delete this information so it would be great if
this could be fixed.
There are ways to get around the format deflections; we don't lend AV
but get a couple of copy/article requests a day for items in AV format-
mostly DVDs. Either someone made a mistake ordering these, someone is
completely ignorant of copyright laws, or someone is really trying to
get around the deflection software and thinks we're not bright enough or
are too busy to spot all the telltale signs of an AV request. We may
have occasion to borrow from the one I saw today.
In both cases, we may have someone new to ILL or someone filling in for
ILL, in both cases ignorant or uncaring of the consequences of their
actions. The person who runs the ILL operations may not even know
what's going on. I can't see that erasing both the OCLC number and the
publication date could have been an accident while- at least with
ILLiad- I could see how the AV article request could have happened in
error.

Heather,
I agree with Sarah. If someone needed something that badly, they should
have called you to explain the situation and see if you'd lend it anyway
- not try to sneak around the situation like that.
I do hope you've had a talk with their ILL people and explained exactly
why you won't loan them anything anymore.
