Subject: [ILL-L] Universal Borrowing Practices Requested
Greetings Colleagues!
The Resource Sharing Committee of the VALE (Virtual Academic Library Environment) consortium in New Jersey is seeking information regarding universal borrowing practices around the country. By universal borrowing, the committee is referring to any student having borrowing privileges at any academic institution within the state. If you have the time, please respond briefly to any of the questions below. Thank you for your time.
1. Does your state have a universal borrowing program in place? I don't know.
2. Does the program include all libraries, academic and public? Don't know, doubt it.
3. How are you defining universal borrowing? Can take out books at any library in the state.
4. Do you have a system in place which allows patrons to request ILLs directly? Yes, books only, OCLC.
5. Any additional comments regarding universal borrowing practices or patron-initiated ILLs would be welcomed and appreciated.
I don' t think OCLC is ready for article direct request (that's what they said), the holdings aren't uniform enough yet. I never heard of universal borrowing before. I think I answered this survey already - Iona VXI
