Hi all in ILL land,
I am wondering how many of you use a term or a string of words other than "Interlibrary Loan" or "Resource Sharing" on an area of your library webpages for the section on your library webpage where your patrons would go to read your ILL policies and submit ILL requests electronically.
Here at Harford Community College, our campus is gearing up for a release of a new intranet type portal to be called "OwlNet" (our mascot is the Owl). The portal will not replace any of the HCC webpages including the HCC Library webpage, but will be a one-stop shop for students and employees to login once, and have access to their email, services across campus, etc. There will be an HCC Library webpage on this portal. The regular HCC Library webpage is not going away, as the portal is only for students and employees so community residents will still have access to services through all the regular HCC webpages.
In a recent Library Division meeting, the Library staff was asked by our Dean to think about what we want included on our Library page portion of the portal. I commented that a link to Interlibrary Loan needs to be there, just like on our HCC Library webpage. It was suggested to me by others at the meeting that the term "Interlibrary Loan" is not something completely understood by our patrons, especially the students. I commented that "Resource Sharing" is the more recent term being utilized by OCLC and by many associations in regard to the Rethinking Resource Sharing idea. I was told that "Resource Sharing" sounds more confusing than "Interlibrary Loan".
So, I've dabbled through some academic institution webpages, and it looks like Interlibrary Loan is the term most used on library webpages.
Does anyone else use anything else? "Get a book" for a link was suggested to me here, but then that doesn't include requests for media or articles. Looking for suggestions.... You may reply to me off list at acraley at harford.edu
Thanks!
