Document Delivery

Judd Knight brought up the idea that copying and scanning even when sending to your own patrons might have to be registered as CCL or CCG. I don't know. But from what I've heard this is really document delivery, and many places charge for it. We don't have the staff to do it, but I can see patrons really like the electronic format of articles, Ed.

Subject: [ILL-L] ILLIAD & copying issues
I am on a small committee that is going to discuss several aspects
related to copies for our patrons (faculty & students) in an effort to
provide better service even if it isn't the way most libraries do it. Part of this is about ILLIAD.
More an more, patrons are wanting things in electronic format for
various reasons. This discussion really came up in a faculty meeting
when ILLIAD was brought up and someone asked if we accepted ILLIAD
requests for items that we had in our collection. One of the librarians
had asked the person who handles these requests and her response was
very honest - it depends on how I feel. Officially, the current policy
is that we would not do this. We feel we should have a more definitive
policy not based on how the staff person feel that day! Here are some of
the possibilities that we will be discussing:
* Accept ILLIAD requests for any article whether we have the article
or not (affects staff time, could affect copyright payments)
* No longer charge for copying (how much do we copy and is the
revenue significant? The feeling is that the copy machine is not
used as much as it used to be)
* Purchase a scanner for the students to use so that they can scan
an article and email it to themselves (other than initial purchase
and maintance, little or no cost - not using paper or toner)
I would like to know if any of you are involved in any of these things
or if you know of other libraries that do. Other than cost issues, do
you see any other problems, particularly with copyright. Do you have any other suggestions?
